
The rank of non-commissioned officer's is to be marked by chevrons on both sleeves of the uniform tunic and the overcoat, above the elbow, of silk or worsted binding, half an inch wide; in the color of the branch of Army; points down; the chevrons shows the rank and the branch of the Army. Union Chevrons have dark blue wool background ,while the Confederate chevron have gray background material. The stripes may be yellow for cavalry, sky blue for infantry and red for artillery for both Union and Confederate chevrons.Medical Steward's chevron have dark green background. while the marine chevron have red background.
